Cornish was born in Lochinvar, New South Wales, as the second of five children. She grew up on a 170-acre farm, attended Catholic school, and was fascinated by independent and foreign films. Abbie Cornish is a vegetarian and enjoys painting, like her mother, who is also a painter. Cornish occasionally contributes and performs live with the Australian hip hop outfit Blades. In January 2010, she appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and spoke of her continued involvement with Blades. Her family currently resides in the Hunter Valley.
In 2007, Cornish began dating actor Ryan Phillippe. Phillippe and she attended the Calvin Klein 40th Anniversary party on Cockatoo Island in Sydney on 16 December 2008. Phillippe also spent some of the 2008 Christmas break in Australia with Cornish and her family. On 21 February 2010, Cornish's publicist announced that Cornish and Phillippe had ended their relationship.
